Did You Know?
Sows need minimum weight before first estrous cycle? Correct! Female boar and wild pigs need to reach a minimum weight of between 60 and 75 pounds to start their first estrous cycle. It commonly happens around age one provided good food resources are available. Their fertility is influenced by the availability and quality of food, particularly oak mast in fall. Acorns are a ‘pulsed’ resource. Their availability changes from year to year depending on weather conditions. Boar fertility is low in years with poor mast yields. Consequently litter sizes will be smaller because of the diminished health of the pregnant females. It results in slow population growth of boar for that year.
